Educate. Elevate. Celebrate.
Our student-athletes had the opportunity to hear from @VanderbiltU historian Brandon Byrd about the significance of #Juneteenth. Thank you, @bronaldbyrd.
#AnchorDownThanks to Dr. Byrd for sharing his knowledge about #Juneteenth. We should all be inspired by the perseverance that transformed our Nation. Emancipation may have occurred on paper, but we are still working collectively towards freedom, equity, and equality to advance our society.

Meeting The LSU Tiger #StoryTimeWithJP

By Jerraud Powers 2007, Auburn versus LSU at Tiger Stadium. This was a game I had been looking forward to for a long time. You grow up in the South watching the SEC and learning about the history of each team, whether you like the team or not. LSU has one of the best atmospheres and traditions in college football. Their fans are crazy, their players are good and the stadium is loud. I remember being on the bus, headed to the stadium, and once we got to campus, the LSU fans literally wouldn’t let our bus get to the stadium. Yes, we had the police escort and everything, …

Andrew, I Wish You Health and Peace #StoryTimeWithJP

By Jerraud Powers 2012. We just came off of a terrible 2011 season that got a great coaching staff and front office fired. Peyton Manning got released that off season. Jim Irsay hired Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano, as general manager and head coach. All the talk that off season was about a “can’t miss QB prospect” out of Stanford. Everyone was raving how good this kid was and how he might be the best QB prospect since Peyton Manning himself. Before the Colts front office decided to cut Peyton, I remember having conversations with some of the key veterans on the team about, “What if” Peyton gets healthy, he …

Draft Day #StoryTimeWithJP

By Jerraud Powers Iron Bowl 2008. We lost to Alabama for the first time in six years. I remember sitting in the locker room talking with Senderrick Marks about the game and plans for the future. Sen was projected to go in the first round of the draft. He knew before the season began that there was a chance he could enter the draft after the season was over. We were both juniors at the time and before we could make it to the bus, we got word that Coach Tubb had gotten fired. At the moment, I had planned on returning to school for my senior season. Sen’ told …

Jerraud Powers intercepts Peyton Manning #StoryTimeWithJP

By Jerraud Powers My first training camp in the NFL was tough. Two-a-day practices and a defensive coach who thought I couldn’t do anything right. Every athlete has had the one coach who saw a wrong in every right thing that they did. Larry Coyer was my defensive coordinator, and he had to be 70 years old (or older) at the time. My roommate for camp was Jacob Lacey. He was out of Oklahoma State and was a baller. In our coaches eyes, we were too cool and too relaxed for his liking. We rarely showed any emotion when it came to work but we worked hard and had a …

Iron Bowl and The Dog Bite #StoryTimeWithJP

By Jerraud Powers Nov 24, 2007. Iron bowl. The one game that you can be remembered for forever in the state of Alabama. The one game that make families separate, the game that gives you an excuse to stop whatever it is that you are doing and watch closely, praying to the football gods that your team wins. It was my redshirt sophomore season and I was having a great year. Our defense was filled with a lot of good players, and I was able to stand out among a talented group. Just to name a few players, Quentin Groves, Senderrick Marks, Antonio Coleman, Tray Blackman and Patrick Lee, all …

War Damn Eagle #StoryTimeWithJP

In the state of Alabama, you are required from birth to choose either Alabama or Auburn as your team. Some people pick their allegiance based on family history, some pick based on personal preference. I didn’t grow up rooting for either team. I used to always go for the underdog, and I was a big Miami fan because of Ed Reed and Sean Taylor. When the recruiting season started for me, I was in the 10th grade. Once I made a name for myself and started gaining some traction, I had offers from schools all over the country. But like most athletes in the state, it really came down to …

The Rookie Dinner #StoryTimeWithJP
2009, week 6. The day was set for me and another fellow rookie to take the secondary out to what is called, “The Rookie dinner.” I had heard plenty of stories from the past that were not encouraging, but I wanted to have a good time and enjoy the night. We all get to Ruth’s Chris Steak House at 7pm. They take our group to a secluded back room where expensive looking champagne and liquor bottles were set up nicely and circled the entire room. The waitress is opening a particular champagne bottle and filling glasses every other second. Another waiter is bringing food in every five minutes, well at least that’s how it seemed. The veteran players were starting to fill the room, and I noticed something wrong immediately. Most of the players brought either …
