Spice Adams Locker Room Shenanigans #StoryTimeWithEarl

By Earl Bennett

What it is like having “Spice” in the locker room cannot be reenacted or recreated. From front flips to constant jokes, there was always humor around the corner — especially when Spice got on a roll. No one could deflect or stop the flurry of jokes from mounting.

As a rookie you try to get a good feel for everyone in the locker room. You tend to stay away from the older guys because they think you are trying to steal their job, so there is always a little animosity. But when I met Spice, there was a grin and a joke shared. He was the most jovial teammate I have had.
My favorite Spice moment was recording him stepping in the locker room. Friday practices were always good days. Coach Lovie Smith called the “Fast Fridays.” You practiced for an hour in shells and helmets. Atomic Dog by George Clinton blasted through the speakers in the locker room. Spice, a member of Omega Psi Phi (Que Dog) heard the song, which is an anthem for the fraternity, and started stepping. This was not your ordinary step you would witness in the yard. This was like the movie Stomp the Yard mixed with You Got Served with a “Spice.” I had the pleasure of being the cameraman.

It was never a dull day with Spice around. From trips to London with him posing in the lobby or him finding DJ Moore’s “Fan Night Face Cutout” and holding it up to his own face while imitating DJ, was what made Spice unique and genuine. He would roast anyone and make you feel comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time. Everyone knew it was all love and laughter with Spice.
