My Top 10 Wide Receivers for 2019

By Earl Bennett

There is always a debate about receivers and who should be ranked higher. Are they rated off stats, pure abilities or in-depth analysis of game tape? What is typically missing from “the top” receiver conversation is their intellect, toughness, blocking and effecting the team when they are not receiving the ball. Drawing coverage, being the clear-out guy and occasionally taking a break to discombobulate the defense. Teams practice and study for the top players to be in the game a lot. So, when they are not, they can run their usual defense, which makes play a little easier than usual.

There is no doubt that most wide receivers in the NFL are gifted. They are fast, smart, agile and robust. My top 10 receivers are broken down into the following categories: Intellect, Route Running, Catching, Blocking, Toughness, Team Player, and Detail to Assignment. Julio Jones is my top receiver because he does it all. Jones is exceptional in the blocking game. He’s robust, competitive and a true team player. With a blistering 4.3 speed, the ability to make the tough catch with excellent routes, while standing 6’3 220 pounds makes him an anomaly among this group of receivers.

Top 10 WRs

  1. Julio Jones
  2. Antonio Brown
  3. DeAndre Hopkins
  4. Davante Adams
  5. Odell Beckham JR.
  6. Michael Thomas
  7. Mike Evans
  8. Keenan Allen
  9. Tyreek Hill
  10. AJ Green

As a former slot wide receiver, I had to show some love to this group of receivers. Any wide receiver can be in the slot on any given play, however this list is for the 3rd down receivers who will primarily be in the slot. Slot players are usually the little quick guys who are incredibly attentive to detail. They are the safety blanket for receivers. The chemistry between the quarterback and slot is so critical because the defenders roam in the intermediate passes. There is a small margin for error and having a connection will go a long way. That is why Julian Edelman is my top slot receiver. Edelman has the chemistry and connection with the quarterback, intellect, route-running ability and toughness to go across the middle of the field and take big hits.

Top Primary Slot WRs

  1. Julian Edelman
  2. Jarvis Landry
  3. Adam Thielen
  4. JuJu Smith-Schuster

  6. Tyler Boyd
  7. Golden Tate
  8. Cole Beasley
  9. Taylor Gabriel
