A Failed Destiny Ploy #StoryTimeWithEarl

Training camp was always fun…for the first few days. Away from any distractions, playing football, dining and video gaming with teammates was cool. We knew there would be fights and disagreements, but at the end of the day everyone had one goal — bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Chicago. One particular instance at training camp garnered everyone’s attention.

As we began drills to start practice, we look up on the hill to see a guy in a helmet working out. He is doing pushups, sit-ups and cone drills.  Not only does he have the fans’ attention, but he has the players’ attention as well. We were like “Look at this guy. Who does he think he is?”

Eventually, he caught the eye of Coach Lovie Smith. The guy, a former college player, stated he was a better return man than the future Hall of Fame member #23. This brought about jokes and even had some of the players asking the coaches if he could join the scrimmage later in practice.

This guy was determined to be seen. Somehow, he maneuvered through security and was on a golf cart. He also made it into the training room for a physical. During this time the trainers asked him “Who sent you?” His response of “Destiny” had to be the best we ever heard.

We had to tip our hat on his ingenuity, but unfortunately “Destiny” was not authorized to be there. “Destiny” never called the front office to schedule a tryout. The only “Destiny” he met was the back of a cop car after he was arrested for trespassing. If only he had gone through the right channels, he may have had an opportunity.
